How to read sector rotation against SPY
A practical guide to relative performance, leadership changes, and what ETF prices can tell you.
Start with the benchmark
Compare each sector ETF with SPY over the same completed sessions. If a sector gains 2% and SPY gains 1%, the sector leads by 1 percentage point. A sector can also outperform while falling, provided it falls less than SPY.
Check whether leadership is changing
Look across more than one window. A sector can lead over five sessions while trailing over twenty. Check the closing date and time window before comparing rankings or drawing conclusions from a single chart point.
Know what the chart measures
